Prayer of the Month, February 2007
A Lakota Christian Directional Prayer

submitted by Eddie Oliver

We turn to grandfather in the WEST, where the color is black and the messenger is the thunders. From you comes the first medicine, the water; all the opposite-things in life dwell here. We are brave in all we do.

We turn to grandfather in the NORTH, where the color is white and the messenger is the buffalo. Winter, cold and all hardships dwell here. We draw upon your endurance to face all things.

We turn to grandfather in the EAST, where the color is red and the messenger is the golden eagle. Light, sun and enlightenment dwell here. Knowledge and wisdom guide our lives.

We turn to grandfather in the SOUTH, where the color is yellow and the messenger is the white crane. Our dead relatives travel this direction and the new life of spring dwells here. We have renewal to begin all things anew.

We turn to grandfather in the HEAVENS, where the color is blue and the messenger is the spotted eagle whose high flight draws us upward. We live the high spiritual life of our true selves.

We turn to grandmother EARTH, whose color is green and whose messenger is the mole. From you comes all nurturing and growth. We walk a good road upon you every day of our life.

With all things, we live as relatives, for we have turned to God who created us and to the Spirit who makes us Holy. Amen.
