FOURTH ANNUAL RENAISSANCE FAIRE
Sunday, May 4, 2008, Noon - 4 p.m.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! A day of celebration and merriment, dubbed the Renaissance Faire, is to be held on the 4th day of May in the year of our Lord 2008 on the Unity Renaissance Church grounds, located at 1120 N. Eden Way in the fair hamlet of Chesapeake (just past Greenbrier Mall). Food, fun, and festivities from the Renaissance period will be offered to one and all from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Nestled in the woods, the site is the perfect atmosphere for going back into time when maidens were rescued by knights and dragons roamed about. There are castles and knights and maidens at the Faire, as well as games and prizes and tests of skill.

Our Outdoor Theater will also feature entertainment throughout the afternoon, including: 4 one-act humorous Renaissance plays (suitable for familes) written by James Scott, a local playwright with a flair for writing witty plays and poems; the exciting and funny juggling duo “Pep and Will” performing their amazing feats whilst telling an engaging tale about a magic frog; and Robin Hood’s not-to-be-missed merry “Men in Tights” who will perform their robust song and dance of the same name at the beginning and end of the Faire.

This year’s faire is proud to announce that the 32-singer Renaissance Chorus of Princess Anne High School, directed by Donald Nultemeier, will be appearing at 1:30 and 2:30, performing songs from the Renaissance era.

The Royale Procession, boasting the Renaissance king and queen and their entourage, will parade through the grounds shortly after the Faire begins. Mingling with the crowd will be wandering minstrels, jugglers, and others dressed in the garb of the Renaissance era. Re-enactors from the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Virginia Medieval Arts Assocation will be on site with tents, colorful banners, knights, and historical representations of artifacts. They’ll also reenact ancient skills needed in battle.

A wealth of fun for singles, families, children and adults, the Faire boasts booths to test your skill at javelin throwing, archery, Pall Mall, and catapulting the castle. Other festivities include a Punch and Judy puppet show, face painting, The Dragon’s Lair toss, and a Castle moonbounce. Hair garlands and food will be available for purchase.

Some of our guests may end up in the stocks, but most will be treated royally. One must be careful of the sheriff, however, who has been known to accept bribes to lock up innocent bystanders. To regain their freedom, prisoners must either bribe their way out or seek pardon from the queen.

Tickets for activities and food are purchased at the door in bundles of $5 (5 tickets), $10 (10 tickets) and $15 (20 tickets). Admission is a $5 minimum ticket purchase. Each event and the food will have a ticket value. Children 3 years of age and under may participate in the activities free of charge.

Come as you are or dress in the period costume, but be sure to mark your calendar to join in the fun! For directions, call Unity Renaissance at (757) 420-5280 or visit our website at www.unityrenaissance.com.

Acoustic Dreams: A Benefit Concert to Help House Local Homeless People
Saturday, January 19, 2008, 7 p.m.           Click here for the Event Poster

Whatever it is that gives certain singer-songwriters real promise and broad appeal, Julie Clark has it! It’s her voice that wins you first...surprisingly vulnerable, sincere, and somehow comforting. A captivating sound that leads you willingly into her memorable, acoustic pop/rock songs.

Clark’s award-winning songwriting matches the quality of her voice – clear, direct, and full of emotion. Her lyrics paint vivid images of love and lust, heartbreak and obsession, secret yearnings, and the struggle between temptation and commitment.

A nationally touring folk-pop artist and guitarist, Clark is based in Hampton Roads and appearing at the Unity Renaissance “Acoustic Dreams” concert to benefit Gosnold Apartments, a Hampton Roads facility that provides housing, job counseling, and support for the homeless.

Local favorite and accomplished singer/songwriter/guitarist, Lewis McGehee, has also signed on to favor the audience with his classic style and soothing renditions of songs by Clapton, Dylan, Taylor and Buffet as well as his own originals. Voted top acoustic act for three consecutive years in Portfolio Magazine’s Musician Poll, McGehee has toured nationally with John Prine, Christopher Cross, Bruce Hornsby and other well-known artists.

The concert promises to be a one-of-a-kind in the area, featuring a variety of acoustic music to fit almost everyone’s taste. Janet Kriner, coprincipal cellist with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, will be delighting the audience with the lush sounds of the cello. "Leigheas" (pronounced as lay-huss from the Irish language meaning Medicine and Healing) will play the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland. The aptly named group, which consists of a dentist, a paramedic, a music therapist, a clinical psychologist, research scientists, physicians, and a few Boy Scouts have found a refreshing outlet in their lively music.

There’ll be the toe-tapping bluegrass music of Tidewater Bluegrass & Gospel Band, founded by Leon Best who was instrumental in forming the Tidewater Bluegrass Music Association.

Also on the bill are some of Unity’s own talented performers – The Tabbanor family, Angie Woodard, Eric Vetterick, and Kathy Flynn – all of whom are crowd-pleasers.

“Acoustic Dreams” will be held on Saturday, January 19th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Unity Renaissance Church, 1120 N. Eden Way in Chesapeake (behind Greenbrier Mall). The benefit concert admission is a suggested donation of $10 to $20. For more information please call the church, 757-420-5280.

"Peace by Piece" Christmas Play
Saturday, December 8, 2007, 7 p.m.

Local writer, James Scott (The LOUD Poetry Guy) of Chesapeake, Virginia, has done it again...written a charmingly whimsical play with a twist - and lots of humor on the side.

Seven adults, known collectively as The Seven Depressants, take the stage at Unity Renaissance Church in Chesapeake on Saturday, December 8th at 7 p.m. The play starts out depressing and heads downhill from there with each character being completely miserable during the holiday season. That is, until God arrives, along with a group of scholars who teach these folks about Christmas history and traditions and bring them back to the joy of the holiday season.

Along the way you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll share in some outrageous performance poetry, and you'll find a bit of yourself somewhere in this wonderful cast of characters.

Bring your friends, your family, and your heart, and you'll learn more truth about Christmas in one evening than you've probably learned in your entire life!

"Christmas, Peace by Piece" is a free event performed at Unity Renaissance Church, 1120 N. Eden Way, Chesapeake. For directions, call 757-420-5280 or visit www.unityrenaissance.com/about.htm.
