On our most recent Board of Trustees retreat we each drew a word at random. The word I received was Wisdom. Wisdom?? I thought. What the heck do I know about wisdom? I felt as if I was the last person who should have received such a word. Or maybe I am in need of wisdom? How does the word Wisdom land for you?
Upon further reflection, what do I know about wisdom? When I think of wisdom, I tend to think of “Old People,” those with grey hair and wizened visage. Wait, I have grey hair! Does that mean I am wise? I also think of the Wisdom of Soloman and the book of Proverbs. Or maybe the wise old Owl?
Wisdom was the Daily Word for January 30, 2026. The affirmation was “I use divine wisdom to discern my best choices.” The verse was from Proverbs 2:6, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” The body of the text talks about quietly turning within and communing with the divine to discern the best choice.
What do I know about wisdom? I think, if nothing else, I realize that I do not know it all. So, after doing some research (Google) I have come up with three “Words of Wisdom.” Humility. Listen. Wait.
Humility: I need to be humble enough to realize that I do not know everything and that it is okay to seek guidance. I understand my place in the larger order of things and do not take my desires, successes or failings too seriously.
Listen: I ask for and listen to guidance given from others. When I take in guidance from others, I focus my attention on the divine presence, allowing my heart to open and my mind to become clear to possibilities.
Wait: I wait and let everything percolate and gel, trusting that the right and perfect outcome will manifest in the right and perfect time.
Words of wisdom? Maybe? Do I follow what I listed above? Certainly not all the time. Why not? Good question. Maybe gaining wisdom is a continuum of learning. I can only continue to humbly seek, listen and wait.
Thanks,
Don
