You Say...

There are many parts of our Unity Renaissance service that touch us deeply. Sure, Rev. René’s message is usually at the top of my list, but everything plays together in an integral harmony. There are times in the service when the hair on the back of my neck stands up.

That happened at this past Sunday’s Mother’s Day service—and not simply because of Rev. Nicole Charles’ brilliant “preachin’.” Week after week the Unity Renaissance Music Team brings the juice, taking us further into meaning and emotional depth, raising an already moving service to a new level. A big shout-out to Nick Flores for taking the team to new horizons.

Two moments from the Mother’s Day service stick out in my mind: one was Cookie Cain hitting the high notes of Lauren Daigle’s “You Say” with the resounding, reassuring words:

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing

You say I am strong when I think I am weak

You say I am held when I am falling short

When I don't belong you say I Am Yours.

And I believe…

The second was our own Rev. Richard Mekdeci, the Posi Music Master, singing yet another one of his treasured, crafted pieces of art: “Good As New,” the touching, heart-searing story of how his mother influenced his songwriting and musical talents. It made so many of us reach for the ever-present tissue boxes in the Unity Renaissance sanctuary. Although Richard and his wife Paula, our stalwart minister for ten years here at Renaissance will be moving to France soon, his Posi imprint on our music shall last forever.

We are deeply indebted to the talents of Rev. Mekdeci as well as all of those on the music team who play an inherently unique, beautiful mode of music that is its own genre that one day will surely be acknowledged as a prime, moving force in the spiritual, not religious awakening taking place on this planet. When you get a chance, look up “Posi Music” on Wikipedia and check out Empower Music and Arts. This is a rich, growing musical category in its own right and I am proud and grateful to say that we have been on the leading edge of this artistic driving force.

You say empower? I say… and I believe. And I can hardly wait to see where it leads us next.
